Talks for Schools
IDEAL FOR SIXTH FORM, PSHE, ENRICHMENT OR GENERAL STUDIES. ALSO FOR HISTORY DEPARTMENTS OR SOCIETIES, HOLOCAUST STUDIES, PEACE & RECONCILIATION PROGRAMMES AND AS PREPARATION FOR SCHOOL TRIPS TO BERLIN AND WW2 SITES.
Since she started in 2011, Angela has been fascinating school audiences across the country and beyond with her illustrated talks.
Drawing on her own experiences, both as an artist working in prisons and as an Anglo-German impacted by a legacy of guilt and trauma from the Second World War, her illustrated talks give deep insights into worlds of which few people in this country have first-hand experience: Prisons, Nazi Germany and Germany’s post-WW2 culture of remembrance, apology and reconciliation.
Making people think is one of Angela’s key goals as a speaker, hence she has been widely welcomed by schools and universities wanting to broaden their students’ minds and encourage independent, compassionate thinking.
- What makes people commit crimes?
- Which methods work best to prevent re-offending… punishment, education or the arts?
- How did Germany emerge from such a dark history to reach where it is today?
- Why is Remembrance important and what are the purposes of statues and monuments?
- Is it essential for nations to process past trauma or atrocities before trying to move beyond them?
For many, it is her combination of personal biographies, letters, diaries and photos placed within a context of historical and political fact, that bring Angela’s subjects alive. And with the shifting perspectives of post-Brexit Britain and a world living through a global pandemic, her talks have become more relevant than ever.
These times are calling for a rethink of national values and direction. Creativity, innovation and resilience are becoming some of the most important skills younger generations will need to thrive. In each of her talks, Angela presents creative solutions and practical steps that will help students navigate our changing and uncertain world.
